The National Foster Youth and Alumni Policy Council’s Social Capital Workgroup, recognizes that securing social capital is vital in the lives of our younger peers in foster care. Social capital refers to the network of social relationships that support healthy lifelong development. A sense of connectedness has been found to be protective against an array of health risk behaviors including substance use, risky sexual behavior, and violence.
